Annually in February
The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race runs every February alternating start locations between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska.
Teams are limited to 14 dogs and one driver or musher. Once they leave the starting chute, the mushers and their dog teams are on their own for the entire 1,000 miles of the race.
Mushers and teams stop at eight checkpoints along the trail and can only receive assistance during their mandatory 36-hour layover in Dawson City, Yukon. Dawson City gives spectators and race fans a unique chance to see this great race up close and personally, giving Yukon visitors an incredible behind-the-scenes look at the Yukon Quest.
The dogs rest and recharge while mushers, handlers and veterinarians make sure the teams are in top shape for the second half of the race. Other than Dawson City, the mushers must care for all their dogs' needs day and night while the Yukon Quest Veterinarian Team monitors all teams throughout the entire race.
The Yukon Quest runs through pristine Northern wilderness following historic Gold Rush and mail delivery routes from the turn of the 20th century. The Yukon communities of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and the half-way point in Dawson City, play host to the race and race fans from around the world.
Following the race from Whitehorse to Dawson City is easy with good highway access the entire way. Tour groups experience the race in person as they travel from checkpoint to checkpoint enjoying the dogs and their mushers. Dogsledding fans and budding novices can try their hand at running sections of the Yukon Quest Trail with licensed wilderness tourism operators.
The fastest Yukon Quest time to date has been just over 10 days, while the longest finish has been 20 days. Most front-runners complete the trip in 10-12 days.
The weather always has a major impact on race times. Temperatures can range from a balmy 0C (32F) to a bone chilling - 40C (-40F) with extremes exceeding both ends of this range.
If you want to witness one of the greatest challenges in the sporting world, step into authentic Northern history and experience the thrill of travelling by dog team, come North and be a part of the next Yukon Quest.
