Welcome to a road-touring paradise

The phrase “scenic drive” takes on a whole new meaning in the Yukon. Beyond the dashboard are massive mountain ranges, lush tundra carpets, emerald lakes and acres of bright pink fireweed. Not to mention a landscape teeming with wildlife.

Road-touring Paradise

Hop in your car or RV – or join a van tour – and let the road take you to places unlike anything you’ve seen. With 11 diverse highways and almost 5,000 km of well-maintained roads to explore, Yukon is a road-tripper's dream. In Whitehorse you'll find RV, camper, trailer and vehicle rental agencies, and many Yukon communities have RV service stations.

You'll find plenty of gas stations on most Yukon highways. On secondary roads, check where the next fuel stop is before setting out or carry extra fuel. Most Yukon roads are paved, and if you venture off main routes be prepared for hard-packed gravel roads and varying conditions. Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition―it's all part of your Yukon road trip adventure.

Iconic Drives

Our seven Yukon scenic drives offer travellers a multitude of options. Each route takes approximately two to five days to complete.

Cruise all the way up the historic Alaska Highway – it’ll take you through eight Yukon communities, the capital city of Whitehorse and dozens of major attractions. From gold panning to glaciers, the Klondike/Kluane Loop combines authentic Klondike Gold Rush history with the best of Yukon’s pristine wilderness. The Silver Trail will lead you into the history of Yukon’s other precious metal history, and you’ll be rewarded with an authentic off-the-beaten-path experience.

For a more remote experience that’s perfect for fishing and wildlife enthusiasts, take the Campbell/Canol Route. Or travel the famed Dempster Highway, Canada’s only all-season public road to cross the Arctic Circle.

The Golden Circle Route takes road trippers from Whitehorse through picturesque Yukon towns and alpine passes to the rugged coast of Alaska. Add the Southern Lakes Circuit to your agenda for an easy daytrip filled with historic sites, abundant wildlife and artist studios and retreats.

White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad

Banner Photos:

Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, the White Pass & Yukon Route was completed in 1900 with the driving of the ceremonial Golden Spike in Carcross, YT. Known as “The Scenic Railway of the World”, it took the labor of 35,000 men, using only black blasting powder and crude tools, to hew out the 110-mile narrow gauge line that originally stretched from Skagway, AK to Whitehorse, YT. WP&YR was named an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1994, joining the Statue of Liberty and the Panama Canal. Today, guests experience the breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, trestles and tunnels from the comfort of vintage train cars. Trips depart from Skagway, AK, Fraser, BC, Carcross, YT, and Whitehorse, YT, between early May and late September each year. The White Pass & Yukon Route is Alaska’s most popular shore excursion and a favorite on many Alaska/Yukon travelers must-see lists.
