Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre

The Klondike Gold Rush brought many a miner and fortune-seeker to the Yukon. Not long after the first miners arrived, stories of giant beasts unearthed during the quest for gold began to spread. To this day, with the help of local miners and First Nations, more treasures of the Yukon’s distant past are being recovered every year. These remains and artifacts tell a story of a world quite unlike the Yukon you see today.

Here at the Centre, we provide our visitors with a look back into the amazing and often bizarre world of ice age Yukon. You’ll learn about ice ages, extinct animals, and First Nations legends—all contributing to a better understanding of the long lost sub-continent of Beringia.

Murals and dioramas depict Beringia’s landscapes, floras and faunas. The Centre also features films, original works of art, and exhibits of discovered remains from throughout the Yukon.

The Centre is located in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Yukon Wilderness Expeditions Ltd.

Yukon Wilderness Expeditions Ltd. started in 1996 as Shadow Lake Expeditions, and has been providing quality gear, services and trips under the same Yukon resident ownership since that time. We’ve grown from a whitewater raft livery to include canoes, kayaks, accessory gear, transportation and expediting services for self-guided journeys. We are the northernmost Swift Canoe dealer, and all our gear is expedition quality.

Guided half-day and longer trips, both in the Southern Lakes region and throughout the Yukon, are based on specific interests like history, wildlife or photography, and follow seasonal rhythms.

We believe in providing a professional service, good advice and the best gear. Whether you’re a better paddler on a tougher trip, or simply want great service and gear for your family outing, we can help. Our trips often start where the others stop, and what you see when you’re on the edge of the map can be stunning!

Discovery Claim National Historic Site

Discovery Claim National Historic Site is where gold was discovered in 1896, triggering the Klondike Goldrush. It is a legally defined mining claim measuring 500 by 2000 feet located on Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River near Dawson City, Yukon. The site is in a deep valley which has been mined heavily since the discovery, first by hand then with mechanized equipment.

The discovery story’s details vary, but it is generally held that Keish /
Skookum Jim Mason, of the Tagish First Nation, discovered the gold. Soon after the discovery, every creek and hillside in the Klondike was being worked.

Explore the 1.5-km/1-mile interpretive trail with the site guide, the
Explora app, or the Xplorer kid's booklet. See if you can find the
Geocache. Bonjour! For more information, call 867-993-7200,
