Travel tips Discovering Yukon Pride
Pride is a time of joy, acceptance, and celebration where communities come together to honour diversity and promote equality. Led by Queer Yukon, Yukon Pride embodies these values while adding its own northern flair.
Unlike many traditional Pride festivals that take place in June, the Yukon spreads celebrations across two months, offering a unique opportunity to soak in the festive atmosphere of Dawson City in June, and Whitehorse and Watson Lake in August. This guide will help you make the most of Yukon Pride.
Celebrating in Dawson City
Dawson City kicks off Yukon Pride in late June, blending cultural history with modern festivities. The town, located on the traditional territory of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation, is known for its Klondike Gold Rush heritage and vibrant arts community. You can expect a little bit of everything, including intimate gatherings, lively performances, raves, dance parties, and LGBTQ2S+ artist exhibitions. The Dawson City Pride Parade is a must-see as it colorfully winds through the historic streets.
Whitehorse Pride Extravaganza
Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon and traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, celebrates Pride the first week of August. The city’s celebration is made all the more enjoyable by its rich cultural tapestry and natural beauty, making it a perfect backdrop for the festivities.. Expect to be wrapped in the good vibes of the local community by music, dance parties, drag shows, and movie nights. One of the highlights is the Whitehorse Pride Parade and Community BBQ, held at Rotary Peace Park. This family-friendly event features face painting, live music, food, games and more.
Live it up at Watson Lake Pride
The Pride celebration in Watson Lake runs in mid-August and wraps up the festivities in the Yukon with a close-knit community feel. Known for its picturesque Sign Post Forest and fascinating Northern Lights Centre, Watson Lake is located on the traditional territory of the Liard First Nation and Kaska Dena Nation, and provides a unique setting for intimate and heartfelt celebrations.
